About
Julia Kowalski has spent a decade studying the failure modes of direct restorations, and she has arrived at a conclusion that manufacturers find unhelpful: the material is rarely the limiting factor.
Her laboratory work focuses on the boundary between technique sensitivity and material performance — the gap between what a composite does in a testing rig and what it does in a molar at 4:40 on a Friday. She has become an unusually plain-spoken critic of studies that measure the former and market the latter.
Kowalski teaches, publishes, and consults for exactly no one. “The moment I take the money,” she says, “the only interesting thing about my results disappears.”
